The Source of Wisdom
What’s the difference between being knowledgeable and being wise?
God’s wisdom is not just knowledge, but is true, understanding, righteous, and wholesome. Divine wisdom is far more than the limitations of the human mind. It is being anchored in Christ, scripture, and being led by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the only one who knows God’s thoughts, and because we have the Holy Spirit in us, He gives us wisdom and knowledge that comes from God.
God’s wisdom is life-changing. It helps us with decision-making, protects us from harm, brings peace and confidence, shapes our character, and strengthens our relationships.
To receive knowledge and wisdom, we have to fear the Lord. When we fear the Lord, we have the desire to obey and honor Him in everything we do.
What is God’s Wisdom?
God’s wisdom is the ability to discern, judge, or have knowledge of what is right and true. It is to be in alignment with His character and purpose, which prepares us for eternity.
Human wisdom is often pleasing oneself; it is limited and foolish. God’s wisdom sees the entire picture from all angles.
“Wisdom is pure, gentle, peace-loving, full of mercy, and the fruit of good deeds.”
James 3:1
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:6
Why is God’s Wisdom Important?
Guides Decision-Making
God’s wisdom helps us make decisions that honor and align with His will. It helps us make long-term decisions that are not led by our emotions, but by the Holy Spirit. It helps us to have self-control and avoid impulsive reactions. His wisdom helps us understand others’ perspectives and values. It is a guide that leads our paths even when we are uncertain or when things are unclear.
For example, God said to King Solomon, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon didn’t ask for wealth or long life, but for wisdom to be able to govern God’s people with discernment and to know the difference between right and wrong. Because he knew that he wasn’t able to lead anyone without God’s help.
Protects from Harm
Wisdom protects us from harmful ways. It helps us recognize danger before it takes place and teaches us to weigh risks and consequences when making decisions. A wise person can see when they are being taken advantage of or being manipulated. Wisdom teaches us how to de-escalate a situation by responding in a calm and thoughtful manner. Wisdom helps us notice any toxic patterns and avoid people who can lead us to destruction. Life experiences teach us how to build and nourish healthy relationships. A wise person knows when to set boundaries and when to say NO.
“My son, don’t ever let wisdom out of your sight. Hold on to wisdom and careful planning. They will bring you a long life filled with honor. As you go through life, you will always be safe and never fall.”
Proverbs 3:21-23
Brings Peace and Confidence
The constant worry of everyday life circumstances can really take a toll on our health. God clearly tells us in His word to go to Him if we are feeling weary and burdened, so we can rest in Him. We have to remember God is always in control. He knows everything about us and knows what is best for us. That’s why we must be led by the Holy Spirit to help us make wise decisions that will only bring peace to our lives. Trust God’s wisdom!
God doesn’t want us to figure things out. We have to leave that to Him. We have to allow the Holy Spirit to guide our steps. He is the only one who knows God’s thoughts and desires for our lives. We must have confidence and faith that the Lord will help us get through whatever we may be facing.
Shapes character
Wisdom is more than making choices. It molds us to be more like Christ and less of ourselves. Before taking action or making decisions, we have to ask ourselves Is this something Christ would say or do?
His wisdom humbles us; it shows us to be patient and have integrity in all areas of our lives. Whether it’s at our jobs, home, church, or even in the smallest things. We should want to be ambassadors of God and honor Him in all we do!
Strengthens Relationships
A wise person is slow to speak, quick to listen, and full of grace. A true wise person uses few words and takes the time to discern by listening instead of being quick to speak or judge. In relationships, we may have different opinions and at times even disagreements. But it is in those moments when wisdom helps us express our thoughts with kindness and clarity.
Wisdom promotes empathy and reconciliation. It encourages us not to react with our emotions, which makes it easier to resolve a disagreement peacefully. A wise person helps others feel heard and valued by showing interest in what others have to say rather than focusing on themselves. Setting boundaries and respecting each other’s limits can help save a relationship from any future resentment.
How to Receive God’s Wisdom
Ask for It
Did you know you can ask God for wisdom? Scripture tells us that God gives generously without finding fault. God wants us to have His wisdom, which is important because His wisdom guides our life’s choices, protects us from mistakes, strengthens relationships, provides peace during difficult times, helps with spiritual growth, and is one of God’s promises to give wisdom to those who lack wisdom.
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.”
James 1:5
Study Scripture
The Bible is full of wisdom. Making time to study the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and James will help you understand God’s wisdom and knowledge. When you meditate on God’s word, you become wiser. You begin to see things differently, and life will start making sense. Studying scripture brings you closer to God. It helps you to really get to know Him and gives you the desire to obey Him. The more you study scripture, you begin to realize that the Bible is NOT just another book. It is a guide that God has given to us to help us live righteously.
Walk with the Wise
When you surround yourself with wise people, you learn how to become wise and knowledgeable. You gain wisdom through observation and life experiences. It is a good thing to have friends or mentors who are rooted in Christ and are filled with God’s wisdom. These are the people who will help you stay on the right path. The same ones that will call you out when you are doing or thinking of doing something that doesn’t honor God.
“Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.”
Proverbs 13:20
Practice Obedience
Wisdom is more than just knowing how to do something; it is putting it into practice. Wisdom and obedience go hand in hand. Wisdom makes you want to obey God even when it’s hard or it doesn’t make sense. Every time you are obedient to God, he will level you up, open doors, and give you greater understanding.
The more we follow God’s ways, the more wisdom we gain. Because His ways prepare us for eternity and not destruction or death.
Conclusion
God’s wisdom is a gift that transforms how we live, love, and lead. It helps us live life in a way that honors God with principles and integrity.
I encourage you to seek wisdom daily, not just for big decisions, but for all areas of life. Let the Holy Spirit lead your life daily.
During prayer and scripture time with God, I want you to journal and ask yourself. What’s one area of your life where you need God’s wisdom right now?
